Pujya Bapu Gramin Rozgar Yojana:On‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ December 12, 2025, the Union Cabinet of India made a historic decision that changed the face of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, commonly known as MGNREGA. The program, which has been attributed as the largest employment guarantee program in the world, has changed its name to “Pujya Bapu Gramin Rozgar Yojana.” The change is not just a symbol; it signifies a new persona and at the same time, the government reaffirms its commitment to rural livelihoods and Gandhi’s vision of self-sufficient villages.

However, the renaming of the scheme is just the tip of the iceberg. The key changes and the far-reaching effects of the policy move are worth a look.

Pujya Bapu Gramin Rozgar Yojana

MNREGA has practically been the rural workforce’s safety net for almost 20 years. The program was initially launched as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act in 2005 and later renamed MGNREGA to honor the Mahatma Gandhi legacy. It thus, guarantees wage employment and implements rural infrastructure projects.

Recently, the renaming of MNREGA to Pujya Bapu Gramin Rozgar Yojana indeed plans to:

Recognize the project with a new title rooted in honor (‘Pujya Bapu’ refers to Mahatma Gandhi).

Encourage people to relate more to the scheme through rural development activities.

Show again that the government is particularly focused on ensuring the livelihoods of villages.

This new term is supposed to emotionally touch the heart of rural India and at the same time serve as a reminder to village residents of the basic pledge of the program: employment dignity and financial support for the marginalized.

Major Policy Enhancements

Along with the rebranding, the central administration has declared real improvements to the program’s provisions, something that workers and advocates have been demanding amidst the rising cost of living.

Employment Days Increased

Initially, rural families had the right to 100 days of guaranteed work per year under MNREGA. The Pujya Bapu Gramin Rozgar Yojana has raised the minimum number of workdays to 125, which means that rural households will be able to enjoy their guaranteed work for 25 days more than before, this 25‑day extension is aimed at assisting income security in rural households throughout the year.

The direct result of this change is more opportunities for work and therefore increased total income for small and marginal workers, particularly during the agricultural offseason.

Minimum Wages Revised Upwards

The revision of the daily wage rate is the most talked-about feature of this reform. The minimum wage has been officially set at ₹240 per day for any work carried out under the scheme, according to the new framework. This is a substantial increase that adjusts for inflation and living costs, which is what workers have been asking for all along.

That said, the wages under MNREGA have historically changed from state to state and have been criticized as being too low compared to the rise in price levels. The introduction of this uniform baseline wage provides transparency to beneficiaries and thus, income becomes easier to predict.

Public Response and What’s Next?

This event has been widely talked about in the media, among the rural masses, and in political spheres. Although most of the people are satisfied with the plan of increasing the number of workdays and raising wages, a few analysts say that careful monitoring and efficient execution will be the determinants of the maximum impact of the plan.

Next, the hands of the clock will indeed show the roles of the various stakeholders including the state governments, panchayati raj institutions, and civil society in ensuring that the Pujya Bapu Gramin Rozgar Yojana fulfills its promise.

The change of the MNREGA name to Pujya Bapu Gramin Rozgar Yojana alongside the prolonged days of guaranteed work and raised minimum wage is a significant milestone in India’s rural employment policy.
