Savitribai Phule Pune University will follow the guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) a few weeks ago and conduct the examinations of final year students in a written format. The exams are most likely to take place in July and require students to prepare for the exam in a written format amid the nationwide lockdown.

The exams are commence expected to begin from July 1 and last till July 31, 2020, and the written exams will only be held for final year students in the university. The decision was taken after the university issued a letter from the state government, directing them to hold the exams.

The decision was also based on the UGC ’s recently issued guidelines, which guide all universities to try written tests for final year students and evaluate all other students on the basis of internal assessments.

Written exams over online exams

Written examinations are a more applicable option for final year students, according to the university official. This is because students cannot gain as much in multiple-choice questions as they can in a proper written exam.

As per media reports, SSPE director of evaluations and examination said, “After deliberations with the board of deans and professors, we will be holding written exams in July for final year students across all faculties.”

Another reason to avoid online exams is that college students may not have sufficient resources to take exams at home. For universities, it is almost impossible to make sure that every student has proper electronic equipment and a stable Internet connection to properly conduct online exams.

As per UGC guidelines, the university would have to take many precautions while holding the examinations. The guidelines issued by the commission clearly state that the university can adopt any mode of examination for final year students, as long as they are practicing social distancing and being safe.
