Punjab: Amritpal Singh likely to be charged with NSA Act after arrest

Amritpal Singh, the Waris Punjab De Chief and a pro-Khalistan leader, was detained by the Punjab Police in a massive crackdown on Saturday. Amritpal Singh was reportedly arrested 23 days after he and his supporters engaged in a violent confrontation with the Punjab Police in Ajnala.

Amritpal Singh’s detention was nothing short of cinematic, as approximately 100 police cars pursued the Waris Punjab De Chief. According to reports, when Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh was traveling from Jalandhar to Moga, police officials halted his convoy and arrested six of his close associates.

During this time, however, Amritpal Singh managed to flee the scene, compelling the police to initiate a massive search operation. After his detention, Amritpal Singh has been transported to an unknown location, according to sources. The location of Amritpal Singh’s detention by the Punjab Police is strictly confidential. Moreover, according to sources, Amritpal Singh is likely to be accused under the stringent NSA Act.

The National Security Act (NSA) permits the federal government or a state government to detain an individual to prohibit him from engaging in any activity that could compromise national security. To prevent the individual from disrupting public order, the government may also detain him. The detention period is twelve months. The extension will occur if the government provides new evidence against the defendant.
