Punjab: Pulwama Martyr's widow refuses to accept Rs 12 lakh compensation

The family of CRPF head constable Jaimal Singh who was martyred in Pulwama attack while driving the bus that was blown apart by a JeM suicide bomber on Feb 14 is upset with Punjab government.

The martyr’s wife Sukhjit Kaur said on Tuesday that the family would not accept any compensation offered by the Punjab government and would return the cheque of Rs 5 lakh presented to them by Punjab minister Gurpreet Kangar.

She said that sometimes back the Punjab Minister gave us a cheque of Rs 5 lakh out of Rs 12 lakh as promised by the state government, but now, I will be returning that money as well.

Jaimal joined CRPF at the age of 19 on April 223,1993 as a constable. He is survived by his parents, wife, son and a younger brother.

Punjab government has announced Rs 12 lakh has financial assistance along with a government job to the family of the Pulwama martyr by the state. The family is angry as no one from the government took time to contact them after the bhog ceremony on Feb 23 and said it will not accept any help from the state government.

Sukhjit said “if the Rajasthan government is giving Rs 50 lakhs to the families then why Punjab is giving Rs 12 lakh? It is that they are insulting us. We hoped that the state government will stand by us but after the memorial service on Feb 23, no one from the state government ever cared to contact us to know under which circumstances we are living.

The family has decided to write a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman complaining about the Punjab government.

Commenting on the claims, DC Sandeep Hans said that “Rs 5 lakh has been handed over as the first instalment of the compensation to the family of Jaimal Singh. The second instalment of Rs 7 lakh including 1 lakh for mother and father will be provided soon. A reminder has been sent to the government.

Faridkot MP Sadhu Singh said that it is unfortunate to know that the government has not yet fulfilled its commitment towards the martyr’s family and has not made contact to provide them compensation.
