Purim 2024 History, FAQs, Activities, and Dates

Purim 2024: Annually, commencing on March 24, 2020, on the Hebrew date of Adar 14, Jewish individuals worldwide partake in the triumphant festival of Purim. This religious observance honors the deliverance of the Jewish people from the malevolent Haman’s scheme to exterminate them from existence in ancient Persia. Thus, celebrate with jubilation and a feast; Chag Purim Sameach!

The Origins of Purim

The narrative of Purim, which translates to “lots” in ancient Persian, commences during the Persian Empire’s rule over Judaism in the fourth century BCE. Following the execution of his wife, Queen Vashti, for disobeying his commands, King Ahasuerus conceived the notion of organizing a beauty pageant as a means to secure a new spouse. Although she swiftly ascended to the throne, Esther, a Jewish girl who had captured his attention, refused to disclose her nationality.

Throughout this period, Haman, an individual who vehemently opposed everything associated with Judaism, was recently designated as the prime minister of the empire. Mordechai, the leader of the Jews and the new queen’s cousin disobeyed the king’s command to kowtow. Haman persuaded the king to issue a decree ordering the mass extermination of the Jewish people on the 13th of Adar because of his intense animosity.

In contrast to Mordechai’s efforts to hasten the repentance of his fellow Jews, Queen Esther extended an invitation to Haman and the monarch to partake in a lavish banquet. Esther disclosed her Jewish faith to her husband and the prime minister during the meal, explaining that attempting to eliminate all Jews would amount to a conspiracy to prevent the assassination of the king’s wife. Haman was executed instantaneously, and Mordechai, the cousin of Esther, was bestowed with the position of prime minister. All Jews were granted the right to defend themselves against anyone attempting to injure them on account of their religion in his first decree.

The Jews of the Persian Empire rose and attacked a significant portion of the populace on Adar 13, who were conspiring to murder them en masse. They celebrated and rested the following day, on Adar 14. While Jews worldwide observe Purim, the country hosts the largest celebration of the occasion, which takes place in Israel from Adar 14 to 15 (March 9 and 10, 2020).

Aloud, recite the Megillah.

The Megillah, also known as the Book of Esther, recounts the prodigious narrative. During Purim, it is customary to listen to the Megillah read aloud once at night and once during the day. To drown out Haman’s name when it is being spoken, it is customary to generate a great deal of commotion.

Donate items to the impoverished

Tradition dictates that during the day, at least two benevolent presents must be presented to the impoverished. Additionally, you may make a monetary contribution to your local synagogue, which will subsequently distribute community services and aid.

Consume triangle-shaped dishes

A widely observed tradition among Ashkenazi Jews is the consumption of triangle-shaped pastries and foods, such as kreplach and hamantaschen. While some argue that the shape symbolizes Haman’s ears, others contend that it represents his three-cornered cap. Regardless, they are delectable, and consuming them signifies the eradication of the malevolence linked to the prime minister, who was anti-Jewish.
