Raina on Gambhir Controversy:The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ heat of scrutiny has been intensified around the head coach of India, Gautam Gambhir, following a string of irregular performances by India, with the media and social platforms being the main sources of the criticism. However, former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina came to Gambhir’s rescue, and he sent a message to the fans, experts, and former players not to put the responsibility of the whole team solely on the coach. Raina thinks that even though Gambhir gives the team the strategy and the way, it is the players who wear the national jersey that have to carry out the plan.

Raina on Gambhir Controversy

After the successful tenure of Rahul Dravid which included India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup, Gautam Gambhir officially became India’s head coach in July 2024. His leadership in IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders, aggressive approach, and being known for direct communication, were some of the factors that made people look forward to his appointment. Although, there comes with it the highest of expectations, especially during the transition phases and the tough series.

Raina’s Statement

Suresh Raina was talking to sports media, as per news outlets, and he said,

You can’t blame Gauti bhaiya for everything. A coach can prepare the players, but once they are on the field, it’s their responsibility to show intent and fight.

Raina pointed out that Gambhir has been such a person who always considers discipline, commitment, and lack of fear as the traits that players should demonstrate when they are under pressure. For him, Gambhir is the one who should guide, encourage, support, and plan, but the matches are those that win the players who play the game.

Why Gambhir Is Facing Criticism?

The criticism arose after India could not maintain consistency in the series they played one after the other. The fans were blaming the team for selection, the players for doing the wrong decisions during the matches, and the coaches for the tactical moves.

Since instant social-media feedback is common nowadays, the moment the coach is felt to be pressurized; the temperature increases dramatically even if he has been at the helm for just a short period of time.

Players Must Deliver Under Pressure

Raina said that cricket is a performance-driven game, and no single person should be held responsible for everything. A coach might do all the planning for practice, match-ups, and strategy, then make the combinations, but when the toss is done, it is the players who are responsible.

The Indian team is going through a reconstruction period which sees an experienced players’ rotation and the youngsters’ promotion. Transition phases are experimental by nature, variations in the line-ups, and adjustments in the leader’s roles.

Experts state that evaluating Gambhir only by the initial results is overlooking the long-term goals like the Champions Trophy, the World Test Championship cycle, and upcoming ICC tournaments.

Raina’s vocal support of Gambhir is significant because he, Raina, was not only in the same team but also shared the same dressing room with Gambhir for years, among them were the victorious campaigns India made in the 2011 ODI World Cup and 2010 Asia Cup.

Many ex-cricketers have been of the same opinion and thus they have spoken out in support of the view that the performance of Gambhir under full competitive cycles should be the measure, not just a few ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌series.
