Rajnath Singh leads Indian delegation at Castro’s funeral

Home Minister Rajnath Singh will lead the eight member Indian delegation to attend the pre-funeral commemoration of Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro. The team will leave for Havana on Tuesday and is expected to return on Thursday.

The team includes Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai, Congress leader Anand Sharma, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, CPI secretary D Raja, BJD MP Jhina Hikaka, BJP MP Ramen Deka and Samajwadi Party MP Javed Ali Khan.

The Parliament on Monday paid tribute to Castro. The Parliament referred him as the “leading light of the Non-Alignment Movement”.

Fidel Castro, Father of Communist Cuba, died on November 25 at the age of 90. El Commandante’s body was cremated on Saturday.

After the nine days mourning period, Castro’s ashes will be buried in cemetery of Santa Ifigenia in Santiago de Cuba on December 4.

Tens of thousands of Cubans queued around Revolution square in Havana to pay respect to their leader.

US president Barack Obama, US president-elect Donald Trump, Canada prime minister Justin Trudeau and Britain prime minister Theresa May will not attend Castro’s funeral.
