Raksha Bandhan 2023

Raksha Bandhan 2023: This year, Raksha Bandhan, a revered Hindu holiday honouring the virtuous bond between siblings, occurs on August 30. Due to the occurrence of Bhadra Kaal on the same date, the festival will also be observed on August 31, as Bhadra is considered unlucky. As a symbol of her love and trust, a sister conducts aarti and ties a rakhi around her brother’s wrist on this auspicious day. In exchange, the sibling lavishes her with gifts and pledges to protect his sister. This ritual represents affection and support between siblings.

It is important to note that the appropriate time to celebrate Rakhi will begin on Wednesday at 9:01 p.m., following the conclusion of Bhadra Kaal.

  • Raksha Bandhan Bhadra concludes at 21:01
  • Raksha Bandhan Bhadra Punchha – 5:30 p.m. until 6:31 p.m.
  • Raksha Bandhan Bhadra Mukha is from 6:31 p.m. to 8:11 p.m.

Raksha Bandhan 2023: A Historical Perspective

The origins of Raksha Bandhan can be traced back to antiquity and the middle ages. The festival is observed by recounting the tale of Rani Karnavati of Mewar, who sent a rakhi to Emperor Humayun to thank him for assisting her when Bahadur Shah of Gujarat attacked her kingdom. The kingdom was saved by Humayun, who hastened to her aid.

According to Hindu mythology, when Lord Krishna’s finger was wounded while fighting the evil King Shishupal, Draupadi tied a piece of cloth to his wrist. In return, Lord Krishna promised to protect her.

In 1905, during the partition of Bengal, Rabindranath Tagore initiated the Rakhi Mahotsav, a large-scale Raksha Bandhan celebration. The festival sought to foster unity and love between Bengal’s Hindus and Muslims.

Regarding the significance of the festival, it is celebrated to honour the pure relationship between a sister and a sibling, in accordance with an age-old custom.
