Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Day History

The date of Ramon Magsaysay’s birth is August 31, 1907. He enrolled at the University of the Philippines in 1927 to pursue an engineering degree. He subsequently earned a bachelor’s degree in commerce from the Institute of Commerce at ‘José Rizal College, where he had transferred. Before he enlisted in the Motor Corps of the Philippine Army during World War II, Magsaysay was an automobile mechanic.

The U.S. Army appointed him military governor of Zambales following the conclusion of the conflict. He was elected to Congress on behalf of the Liberal Party in 1946 and continued to serve for two terms until 1950. It was during these years that he first encountered politics. Magsaysay, as opposed to the majority of Filipino political leaders of Spanish descent, was of Malay lineage.

Magsaysay, a former army officer whom President Elpidio Quirino appointed Secretary of National Defense, oversaw the reform of the Philippine military and the repression of the communist-led Hukbalahap Rebellion. To induce former insurgents to surrender, parole, homesteads, and medical treatment were extended to them.

Magsaysay constructed various infrastructure projects, including schools, hospitals, and farmhouses, on behalf of the Economic Development Corps. He gained the favor of the Filipino people and a reputation for honesty and integrity as a result of these endeavors. He was elected presidential candidate of the Nacionalista Party in 1953, defeating incumbent Quirino.

Magsaysay made sincere attempts to enact reforms in the Philippines, but a conservative Congress that gave the wealthy priority thwarted his efforts. He was unable to implement legislation regarding land reform, and his administration was indifferent to the plight of peasant Filipinos.

He upheld his reputation for integrity and continued to be well-liked by the public until his tragic death in a plane accident on March 17, 1957. Proclamation No. 15, issued by President Ferdinand Marcos in 1966, designated March 17 as Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Day.
