Bengaluru: In a groundbreaking move to modernize India’s digital lending landscape, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has unveiled the Unified Lending Interface (ULI), a centralized platform designed to drastically cut loan approval times from a sluggish 4-6 weeks down to just a few minutes.

Powered by cutting-edge technology from global software provider WSO2, the new system addresses one of the most persistent headaches for lenders: navigating a maze of disconnected data sources across government agencies, fintech companies, credit bureaus, and identity authorities.

Until now, lenders had to painstakingly piece together financial and non-financial data, manually connecting with each source to assess borrowers’ creditworthiness. This time-consuming process led to operational bottlenecks, high costs, and ultimately limited access to credit, especially for underserved communities.

With the launch of ULI, RBI and its innovation arm, the Reserve Bank Innovation Hub (RBIH), have taken a major step in line with India’s larger Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) push. ULI consolidates all the necessary data into a unified system, automating workflows, reducing complexity, and allowing lenders to make informed decisions in real time.

“By integrating varied data sources and automating backend processes, loan processing times have been cut from weeks to mere minutes,” said RBIH. “This isn’t just about speed — it’s about financial inclusion.”

The ULI platform opens new doors for borrowers traditionally left out of the credit system. By incorporating alternative credit data, such as transaction histories or digital identities, beyond just credit scores, the system helps bridge the financial gap for India’s unbanked and underbanked populations.

On the backend, WSO2’s API Manager and Identity Server ensure that this data flow happens securely, complying with India’s data protection regulations. Borrowers also benefit from simplified onboarding, with self-registration features designed to make digital lending more accessible.

This shift comes at a crucial time for India’s financial sector, as embedded finance models, AI-driven credit tools, and real-time digital services rapidly reshape the lending landscape.

For WSO2, the RBI partnership underscores its growing global footprint. Founded in 2005, the company has become a major player in the open-source API and integration space, serving enterprises in over 90 countries.

RBIH, meanwhile, continues to act as a key catalyst for fintech innovation, developing in-house solutions, nurturing startups, and driving customer-centric design.

With ULI now live, India’s dream of frictionless, inclusive finance for a billion people looks more achievable than ever.
