Reflecting on Akshay Urja Day 2023

Reflecting on Akshay Urja Day 2023: The 20th of August is observed annually as Akshay Urja Day to highlight the significance of renewable energy. The day also coincides with the birthday of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The primary objective of commemorating the day is to raise awareness of the energy produced by natural resources such as hydroelectric power, solar energy, wind energy, and biogas.

2004 marked the establishment of the Akshay Urja Day by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The first commemoration was held in Delhi, where the then-prime minister, Manmohan Singh, unveiled a commemorative stamp. In Delhi, nearly 12,000 students from a variety of institutions formed a human chain to promote the day’s purpose.

The purpose of Akshay Urja Diwas is to raise awareness and educate the general public about the use and benefits of renewable energy. This measure primarily seeks to make schools and colleges aware that educating the country’s youth will result in productive solutions. Educational institutions across the nation coordinate a variety of events, including trivia contests, drawing contests, debates, cultural programmes, and rallies with posters and banners about renewable energy.

Ways to use renewable energy efficiently

Renewable energy is also referred to as “green energy” and “clean energy” because, unlike fossil fuels such as coal and oil, the process of generating energy from renewable sources such as solar power, wind, and water emits no greenhouse emissions.

To establish a clean and green environment, we must all learn how to utilise renewable energy more effectively in our daily lives. Here are some efficient methods to use green energy:

Solar panels can be installed on residential rooftops to generate solar energy. This will not only reduce carbon emissions but also reduce energy costs.

The installation of wind turbines is not limited to large wind farms found in wide-open spaces. Smaller wind turbines are available for residential use. The wind can generate electricity by rotating the blades, which assists the internal turbine and generates electricity.

In addition to providing heating and hot water, biomass heating systems consume organic materials such as wood pellets, chips, or logs. Compared to fossil fuels like coal and oil, this can be a lower-carbon method of heating because the wood burned in these systems emits only as much carbon as the tree consumes.
