Remembrance Day 2024 (Haiti): Each year on January 12, Haiti observes Remembrance Day in remembrance of those who perished in the January 2010 earthquake. According to the Haitian government, the 2010 earthquake left the country in ruins and claimed an estimated 300,000 lives; however, the actual death toll is still unknown. In French, one of the two official languages of Haiti, the “Jour de Remembrance” is observed to honor all the Haitians and others who were killed or injured in this catastrophic earthquake.

The History of Remembrance Day

Sadly, the Dominican Republic and Haiti both share the island of Hispaniola, which is extremely susceptible to destructive earthquakes. Numerous earthquakes had struck Haiti, with some of the earliest seismic activity documented during the 1700s, a period when the island was under French colonial rule. According to reports, subsequent disasters devastated entirely several municipalities in Haiti and its neighboring country, the Dominican Republic.

January 12, 2010, witnessed arguably the most catastrophic earthquake of recent memory: the 2010 magnitude 11 earthquake. With a brief duration of 30 seconds, this earthquake of magnitude 7.0 occurred at approximately 16:53 (21:53 UTC), a distance of 15.5 miles from Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. The effect jolted several nearby countries, including the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. Several aftershocks of considerable intensity were about to further devastate Haiti, which was already in a state of severe destruction. Shocks destroyed fifteen percent of the structures on the land.

As a consequence of the absence of building codes in Haiti, over 15% of the structures in Port-au-Prince and the surrounding towns were demolished, killing or trapping occupants and contributing to the death toll, which included countless Haitians, air workers, tourists, and public figures such as thirty members of the Fédération Haïtienne de Football, opposition leader Michel “Micha” Gaillard, and Archbishop of Port-au-Prince Monsignor Joseph Serge Miot.

The international community reacted swiftly to the earthquake by organizing relief operations, donations, and additional efforts in the following days. Nevertheless, the concept was dashed by ineffective implementation, with a significant portion of the assistance being impeded by cumbersome bureaucracy at the donor countries’ level and mismanagement on the part of aid organizations. Despite the recurrence of another earthquake in 2021, the Haitian people’s optimism for a more promising future remains unaffected.
