Rhea Chakraborty's 'smashing patriarchy' tee reminds us of 'privileged' Bollywood stars

Hats off! Hats off to Rhea Chakraborty! The way the woman is still surviving and walking tall is commendable.

Rhea Chakraborty on Tuesday arrived for questioning at the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) office in Mumbai for the third straight day this morning in the investigations into the Sushant Singh Rajput death case. This time, her images went viral on social media for a very different reason.

Chakraborty was seen in a black tee with a quote that read, “Roses are red, violets are blue, let’s smash the patriarchy, me and you.”

Her pictures soon were circulated on the internet. As always people bashed her and tagged her as ‘Arrogant’. Arrogant for what? Wearing a tee? Or giving a message to smash the patriarchy? The people commenting on her tee reflects nothing but the mere mentality of the Indian society.

If you’re a daily user of social media and Twitter, you might be familiar with the word ‘Media Vultures’ until now. The pictures and clips of media persons violating Rhea’s personal space, basic human rights, and moreover social distancing norms are all over the internet. If you scroll through and read the comments, it would bring you no surprise. All you’ll find is ‘She deserves this’.

The Indian media and audience have targeted and vilified Rhea mercilessly for reasons that have nothing to do with the investigation. The attack is ostensibly on Rhea Chakraborty however, it is highlighting the Indian patriarchal society and mindset at its best. The very idea of living in a decent society has been washed-up.

Recently, another Bollywood actor Sawara Bhaskar who is often trolled for her feisty and blunt personality posted a collage of Rhea being hounded by media, and Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan are seen flanked by police personnel walking in ease while they were brought to the court for their different cases.

What do you think about the collage? Did it hit you? The inevitable difference in the pictures makes us wonder about the media trials to bring down a woman in every possible way it can. These trials are an epitome of misogyny and sexism.

When Salmaan Khan was convicted in Hit and run case back in 2002 and a case of Blackbuck poaching in Jodhpur, people supported and glorified him based on his charity work. His fans asked justice for him.

Sanjay Dutt faced charges in the 1993 Mumbai serial blast case. No camera chased him and no media person violated his personal space during his summon to the court. Rather people would wait for him outside the court and boost his individuality by cheering him up.

Rhea is facing an investigation from CBI, ED, and has been arrested by NCB in a drug probe on charges of drug procurement and consumption. Primetime shows had already declared her a culprit. Social media campaigns are perpetually running a smear campaign against her and was praying for her to get arrested.

I remember when I was enrolled in Journalism in my college, this is not what I was taught in Media and Ethics. As a nation, we need to understand that even if she is proved as the only culprit in Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case, no one has the right to violate her human rights. Regarding the case, people have contrasting opinions. However, there is a basic understanding of what is right and wrong. It is an uncomplicated ethics we must look up to. We must remember this vicious prejudice is like a leech on the body that would undoubtedly suck your blood and bring you down to death.

In the recent development in Sushant Singh Rajput’s case, the Narcotics Control Bureau has arrested Rhea Chakraborty on charges of drug procurement and consumption. The actor will be taken for a medical test. The NCB is probing the drug angle in Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case.

Rhea was questioned for the third time today by the NCB. Earlier, the NCB had arrested Rhea’s brother Showik Chakraborty, Sushant’s house manager Samuel Miranda and his cook Dipesh Sawant for buying drugs. Showik had admitted to buying drugs at Rhea’s behest.

Chakraborty has been arrested. But, wait before celebrating and jumping to the conclusion think twice. She has been arrested on charges of drug procurement and consumption not because she killed Sushant Singh Rajput.
