Mahela Jayawardene has announced his upcoming strategic transformation for IPL 2026 through his latest announcement. The head coach of MI has declared that Rohit Sharma has achieved better physical condition because he will perform multiple duties throughout this season.
The reports establish that the franchise will not restrict him to his previous Impact Player duties which he performed during his time with them.
“We came close last year, but (were) not good enough. Every year, our aim is to get there.”
“But I know it’s a long season, so preseason will start the way we usually start with working hard, getting new boys into the setup. With our World Cup guys, we’ve given them a bit of an extended break so that they will join us next weekend”, Jayawardene said.

Jayawardene’s Strategy
The coaching staff relies on his five IPL title victories as captain which provide essential experience to their team while they expect him to guide younger players and maintain his active role in matches.
“The way we managed him last year, he had a few niggles as well so we needed to manage that. The thing is, he is still making a huge impact on the team, whether he is on the field or not. But definitely, this year, I want to keep him more on the field as much as I can,” Jayawardene said.
“But when we are rotating bowlers or the impact player, if the other player needs to be there, most of our guys are all-rounders and bowl as well. So if the captain needs that option on the field, it is something I have to look at and discuss, depending on the opposition we are playing. Two guys who are not all-rounders is Rohit and Surya. So, can you help me with that decision-making? We’ll see how it goes,” he explained.
“A newer version of Rohit as well, much fitter, very committed so I’m looking forward to him leading us from the top,” Jayawardene added.
