Roman Dirge’s birthday is April 29th, 1972. Since infancy, art has been a part of his existence. Dirge continued to draw despite being advised not to pursue a career in the arts, despite the fact that his drawings were not regarded as great masterpieces by his parents and instructors. Soon thereafter, he published “Xenophobe,” an independent publication chronicling San Diego’s artistic movements. Due to a production error in the first issue, he was forced to create a filler comic about an adorable little dead girl. Dirge was inspired to continue developing the stories of Lenore, the little zombie girl who was named after his favourite author, Edgar Allan Poe, as the underground comic became a significant success.
Lenore starred in her own series published by Slaved Labour Graphics from 1998 to 2007. 2002 also saw the production of 26 animated films for Sony’s ScreenBlast website, supervised by Dirge. Unfortunately, Sony retains the rights to these animated marvels, and they are no longer available to the public.
Today, Lenore is still alive, and Dirge continues to illustrate its story alongside other works, such as “Something At The Window Is Scratching,” “Monsters In My Tummy,” and “The Cat With The Really Big Head,” as well as serving as a writer for fellow comic artist Jhonen Vasquez’s show, “Invasor Zim” (2001).
