SC gets 5 more judges, taking the strength to 28

Five new Supreme Court judges including Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Navin Sinha, Mohan M Shantanagoudar, Deepak Gupta and S Abdul Nazeer sworn-in on Friday, taking the apex court’s strength to 28, including the Chief Justice of India. These newly appointed judges at SC were administered the oath of office by CJI J S Khehar this morning.

Justice Kaul previously served as Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and a judge at the Delhi High Court. He also was the Chief Justice of Madras High Court. Another judge, Justice Sinha was the Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court. Previously, he had served as a judge at the Patna and Chattisgarh High Court

Justices Shantanagoudar, the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court had previously served as a judge at the Karnataka High Court as well as president of the Bangalore Mediation Centre and Karnataka Judicial Academy. On the other hand, Justice Deepak Gupta was the chief justices of Chhattisgarh High Court.

Justice Deepak had taken oath as the first Chief Justice of Tripura High Court in March 2013. Another judge Justice Nazeer was a judge in the Karnataka HC.

Including the Chief Justice, the acceptable strength of judges in the Supreme Court is 31. Recently, President Pranab Mukherjee had signed their Warrants of Appointment.
