SC stays declaration of SSC-2017 results, finds conduct of exam tainted

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the declaration of results of SSC examination-2017 for the selection of staff for the Central government ministries and departments, saying the conduct of examination was “tainted”.

After perusing the two status reports of July 25, 2018 and August 30, 2018 filed by the CBI, the bench of Justice S.A. Bobde and Justice A.L. Nageswara Rao said, “We find that there is sufficient material on record at this stage to raise a presumption that the CGL (Combined Graduate Level) Examination 2017 and CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) Examination 2017 were tainted.”

“Hence, there shall be an injunction restraining the respondents from declaring the results of the aforesaid examinations until further orders”, the court ordered.

In the course of the hearing, the bench said: “It prima facie appears that the entire SSC system is tainted and entire examinations are tainted. It can’t be believed that the custodian of the examination paper is himself leaking the paper.”

As the Additional Solicitor General Vikramjit Benarjee tried to defend the SSC officials, the court said, “It is surprising that you are taking this stand. You are appearing for CBI and you should have said that the examination must be cancelled. Your status report implicates several people and you are taking a different stand.”
