After a week’s closure of all educational centres, the authorities on Monday ordered the opening of universities, colleges and higher secondary schools in Jammu and Kashmir. This was declared after an official statement issued in summer capital Srinagar by the provincial administration said all universities, colleges and higher secondary Class 12 level schools will open for academic activities in the Valley on Monday.

The universities remained closed due to widespread protests by students after security forcefully entered a college in south Kashmir’s Pulwama town on 12 April.

The students were agitated over the weekend police raid on a college which eventually led to protests.

The Kashmir University Students Union which is a banned student body had called for protests in all colleges and universities after more than 50 students were wounded in clashes with security forces at a college in southern Kashmir’s Pulwama town.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir CM Mehbooba Mufti met PM Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday morning to discuss the situation of law and order in the state. The renewed violence has also strained relations between the ruling PDP-BJP coalitions.
