The Lok Sabha began its Wednesday session with a commemorative discussion on the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement. The House was addressed by both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress president addressed Sonia Gandhi.

The lower house is expected to introduce the National Sports University Bill, while it will also consider the Requisitioning and Acquisition of Immovable Property (Amendment) Bill, the State Banks (Repeal and Amendment) Bill and the Central Road Fund (Amendment) Bill. The Rajya Sabha is expected to take up into consideration the Indian Institutes of Management Bill.

Opposition leader Sonia Gandhi addressing the Lok Sabha said, “During the freedom struggle, Pandit Nehru spent several years in jail, many Congress workers died in jail.” Referring to the current situation, she said, ” Today it looks secularism and free speech are in danger.”

“There is politics of divide; If we have to preserve freedom, we’ll have to defeat forces endangering it. We can’t and we won’t allow sectarian forces to succeed,” she added.

“We must not forget that some organizations opposed Quit India Movement, such organisations have no role in freedom struggle,” she said.
