Semana Santa Spain 2023: In Spain, Semana Santa is celebrated annually during the week immediately preceding Easter; this year, it is from April 2 to 9. Semana Santa, also known as Holy Week, is observed by Catholics to commemorate the Passion, suffering, and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Throughout the week, religious brotherhoods and fraternities proceed through the streets of nearly every Spanish city. These activities attract visitors from outside of Spain and are frequently promoted in travel guides and international expos.

HISTORY OF SEMANA SANTA SPAIN

Semana Santa commemorates the Passion of Christ, or the agony Jesus endured prior to his crucifixion. The term ‘passion’ derives from the Latin verb ‘patior’ or ‘passus sum,’ which means to ‘endure,”suffer,’ or ‘bear.’ In Catholic tradition, this often refers to particular events from the Christian Bible, such as Jesus’ ‘Triumphal Entry’ into Jerusalem. As he entered Jerusalem on a colt of a donkey, the people saluted him as the Jewish Messiah, the “Son of David.”

As soon as he arrived, he entered the Jerusalem temple and expelled the moneychangers. Judas Iscariot fled the ‘Last Supper’ to betray Jesus to the religious leaders of Israel. Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, where he prayed until his perspiration resembled blood drops, was another significant event. After this, he was immediately arrested, placed on trial, and unjustly found guilty. Jesus was subsequently crucified, but three days later he ascended from the dead.

During Holy Week, religious brotherhoods and fraternities hold penance processions through the streets of Spain. Participants or brothers typically cover their features with conical hooded penitent robes. They have foot shackles and tote wooden crosses or candles. The ‘pasos’, which are floats adorned with sculptures depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ or the Sorrows of the Virgin Mary, are an additional intriguing aspect of the processions. Typically, the displays are accompanied by marching bands, or “marchas procesionales” in Spanish. Holy Week in Spain is more than a religious celebration; it also attracts tourists from around the globe who come to witness the processions. Typically, processions are promoted at major international fairs, in handbooks, and on television.
