Siddaramaiah Governor Meeting Today: Will DK Shivakumar Become Karnataka CM?

Siddaramaiah Governor Meeting Today: Political uncertainty in Karnataka intensified on Wednesday after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah sought an appointment with Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot for May 28, triggering widespread speculation about a possible leadership transition in the Congress-led government. The development comes after a series of high-level meetings in New Delhi involving senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge.

Siddaramaiah Governor Meeting Today

Sources within the Congress party indicated that Siddaramaiah’s request to meet the Governor has fueled speculation that he could tender his resignation as chief minister. Reports suggest the Congress high command has been holding discussions over a potential change of guard in Karnataka, with Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar emerging as the leading contender for the top post.

According to multiple reports, Siddaramaiah is also expected to host a breakfast meeting with cabinet colleagues and Shivakumar in Bengaluru on May 28 before meeting the Governor.

Congress High Command Holds Key Discussions

The latest developments follow marathon meetings held in Delhi between Karnataka leaders and the Congress high command. While party leaders officially maintained that discussions were related to Rajya Sabha elections and Legislative Council polls, insiders claim the leadership issue dominated the talks.

“Yes, he has sought time to meet the Governor tomorrow,” a highly placed source close to the chief minister told PTI.

Speculation over a rotational chief minister arrangement between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar has persisted since the Congress returned to power in Karnataka in 2023. Political observers note that Shivakumar’s supporters have long demanded implementation of the alleged power-sharing agreement.

Siddaramaiah Yet to Confirm Resignation

Despite the intense buzz, Siddaramaiah has not officially confirmed that he will resign. Speaking briefly to reporters, the Karnataka chief minister said, “We will talk about it tomorrow,” avoiding a direct response on the leadership issue.

Several Congress ministers also attempted to downplay the speculation. Karnataka minister KH Muniyappa described the reports as “all speculation” and said no official communication had been made regarding any leadership change.

When asked specifically about talks with the party high command, Siddaramaiah said, “We will talk about it tomorrow,” reported ANI.

However, Congress MLA RV Deshpande reportedly claimed that Siddaramaiah had informed close aides of his decision to step down, adding further fuel to the political drama unfolding in the state.

What Happens Next?

Siddaramaiah’s scheduled meeting with Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot and his breakfast interaction with senior Congress leaders are expected to provide clarity on whether Karnataka is heading toward a formal leadership transition.

If the Congress high command proceeds with a change in leadership, it could mark one of the biggest political reshuffles in Karnataka since the party’s victory in the 2023 Assembly elections.
