Six Red Cross workers killed in Afghanistan

Six workers for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) were killed Wednesday in northern Afghanistan, the organization said.

Unknown gunmen” killed the workers and took two others hostage in Qoshtapa district of Jawzjan province, Lutfullah Azizi, the provincial governor of Jawzjan was quoted by CNN as saying.

He said police are searching for the missing employees.

All the six volunteers killed in the ambush were Afghan nationals.

There was no immediate claim for the attack in Jowzjan.

According to media reports, the Red Cross teams were transporting supplies to areas affected by deadly snowstorms.

In 2013, Taliban group had attacked a Red Cross office in Jalalabad.
