Soviet Occupation Day 2024 (Georgia): Soviet Occupation Day is annually observed on February 25 in the country of Georgia. In observance of Memorial Day, the Red Army’s invasion of Georgia in 1921 is remembered. The inaugural celebration of the holiday occurred in 2011, following its establishment in 2010. The Georgian proclamation of the holiday coincided with Moldova’s Soviet Occupation Day, observed on June 28, 1940, to commemorate the Soviet occupation. The Soviet Occupation Day in Moldova was, nevertheless, nullified by its judiciary in 2010. Latvia, an additional Soviet-occupied nation, observes its day of remembrance annually on June 17.

The History of Soviet Occupation Day

The Caucasus region contains the nation of Georgia. Historical in nature, it is a representative democracy that was established in classical antiquity. Georgian territory was annexed to the Russian Empire in 1783 and remained an integral part of the empire until its dissolution in 1917, after the Russian Revolution. Georgia subsequently joined the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic (T.D.F.R.) on April 22, 1918, which was a brief republican regime. Georgia, however, proclaimed its independence on May 26, roughly a month later. The nation did not have sovereignty for an extended period.

The Soviet Red Army invaded and occupied the Democratic Republic of Georgia (D.R.G.) on February 25, 1921, and installed a Bolshevik regime in the country as part of the Soviet Invasion of Georgia. The incursion originated from a Soviet Russia that had recently instituted an expansionist policy to augment its dominion over the regions formerly under the control of the Russian Empire.

It is noteworthy that Moscow did not reach a unanimous consensus on the invasion; in reality, Russia had already acknowledged the independence of Georgia the previous year. Two Soviet officials of Georgian descent, Joseph Stalin and Sergo Ordzhonikidze, orchestrated this invasion under the guise of aiding working-class uprisings in the country. Georgia reclaimed its independence several months before the Soviet Union’s 1991 dissolution; on April 9, the Georgian Supreme Council proclaimed independence. The first commemoration of Soviet Occupation Day occurred in 2011, after its inception in 2010.
