Space Calendar May 2024: NASA astronauts and former Navy test pilots Barry “Butch” Wilmore and Suni Williams will pilot Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner on its first crewed flight aboard an Atlas V rocket.
A Crew Test Flight to the International Space Station will launch from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida, and last about a week.
In addition to testing out all major systems with astronauts aboard, CFT follows two uncrewed flights by Starliner:
It was a 2019 flight that failed to reach the ISS as planned, and a 2022 flight that reached the ISS and met all other major flight objectives.
Eta Aquarids
The Eta Aquarid meteor shower 2024 peaks on May 5 and is active between May 15 and May 27.
It is Halley’s Comet that produces the chunks of space debris that create the Eta Aquarids. Observers near the equator or the Southern Hemisphere are best able to observe the Eta Aquarid meteor shower, which is classified as a strong shower.
Full Flower Moon May 23:
On Tuesday, May 23, the full moon will reach its full phase at 9:53 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (13:53 GMT). According to Farmer’s Almanac, the full moon is known by a variety of names that derive from Native American sources.
In May, flowers bloom across North America during the Flower Moon full moon.
