Just a few weeks prior to the admission season of 2017, at least 23 fake universities and 279 such technical institutes have been found to function in India. The UGC and the AICTE have barred total 23 such fake educational institutions in eight states in India.
These Universities are functioning against the provisions of the UGC Act, 1956. Nine universities of the 23 were engineering and technical universities are said to be functioning in UP, seven in Delhi, two in West Bengal and two in Odisha. Maharashtra, Bihar, Karnataka and Bihar also have a number of invalid technical institutes.
The technical education regulator sent out a public notice to warn students.
