In a sharp rebuke, the Supreme Court of India on Tuesday held the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) in contempt for illegally cutting down trees in Delhi’s ecologically sensitive Ridge area for a road widening project.
The apex court, responding to a petition highlighting the unauthorized felling, ruled that DDA officials had violated prior court orders meant to protect the Ridge’s green cover, a crucial lung space for the capital.
As corrective action, the Court ordered a large-scale afforestation drive to compensate for the environmental damage. The court also indicated that it would monitor compliance closely, signaling a tough stance on violations of ecological safeguards in the city.
More updates on the court’s detailed directions and DDA’s response are expected soon. Stay tuned to Newsd.in for the latest developments.
