The Tamil Nadu Government has issued a notification wherein the English names of 1,018 places in 37 revenue districts of Tamil Nadu have been changes to authentic Tamil names.
The government order following the announcement said committees were set up in each district to recommend how place names should be written in English.
Tamil development director G Vijayaraghavan said, “A group of language experts, representatives of Tamil organisations and professors along with government administrators finalised the names at the district level and later at the state level. It took almost two years”.
The Revenue Department and Municipal Administration Department has been deployed the responsibility of making those changes.
