Tamil Nadu: Several fishes found dead in Coimbatore's Selva Chinthamani Lake due to heat wave

Tamil Nadu is facing an extreme heatwave resulting in ponds and lakes going dry. Most of the state including capital Chennai is reeling under a severe water crisis. Amid the already distressing condition came a disturbing sight of several fishes which were dead on the periphery of the dried up Selva Chinthamani lake caused by the severe heat wave in Tamil Nadu earlier this week.

The major water bodies have dried up due to rainfall deficit in the past two years. This has also led to depletion of ground water levels. Four major lakes of Chembarambakkam, Poondi, Red Hills and Cholavaram that supply water to the city are almost dry.

In one of the worst summers, taps have gone dry in most parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai city, affecting citizens and corporates alike.

Such is the state of affairs that citizens have started locking up stored water and are using it with extreme caution. Many complain that they can’t even bathe or wash their clothes as there is no water for these basic activities.

The extreme weather conditions in the Tamil Nadu has resulted in protests breaking outside the Coimbatore City Corporation Office by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) too, sending a message to the state about its worsening water condition.
