Tarun Gogoi returns to court after 36 years to challenge Citizenship Act

The last time Gogoi ever ventured in a court was the time when he assisted veteran Congress leader P Chidambaram. He argued that case in 1983. That was the last case he ever contested.

After three decades, veteran Congress leader and three-time Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi took up his law profession at the Supreme Court on Wednesday. He also attended court proceedings as a lawyer. He took up a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Citizenship Amendment Act.

The last time Gogoi ever ventured in a court was the time when he assisted veteran Congress leader P Chidambaram. He argued that case in 1983. That was the last case he ever contested.

Gogoi said while giving his opinion on the matter, he said, “I will assist Chidambaram while he will argue against the CAA in the apex court. “This act is unconstitutional. When I was the Chief Minister I had sought asylum for the refugees who had come to India facing persecution in the neighboring countries.”

The top court will take up the matter again on January 22 after issuing a notice to the Centre. The contestants that filed the plea were, The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an ally of the ruling BJP; Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha, were among those who filed pleas.

“My father and former 3-term Assam Chief Minister Shri Tarun Gogoi don his lawyer robes to file his case against the Citizenship Amendment Act in the Supreme Court today,” his son and Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi tweeted earlier in the day.

Gogoi had opposed the Citizenship Act, calling it “discriminatory”. Gogoi, while defended the NRC in Assam, claimed NRC and Citizenship Amendment Bill intensely contradicts one another.

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, people should refrain from speaking about things that are not there in the CAA for it will lead to inciting violence. “Though 2014 is the cut-off some are repeatedly saying people will keep on coming. I am telling you that this amounts to inciting people and is against public peace. It may disrupt the existing peace”.
