The Player With the Most Ashes Runs in History: The Ashes is firmly established as one of the most important events on the world athletic calendar, and one of the greatest rivalries in all of cricket is played out between England and Australia.
Since the two nations first competed against one another all the way back in 1882, the five-match Test cricket series has produced some notable individual performances with the bat and the ball.
There have been 31 hitters in the history of the Ashes who have scored more than 2,000 runs in their career, but only six of those cricket players have gone on to score more than 3,000 runs.
We have analysed the past Ashes series in order to create a profile of the best batsmen to represent Australia and England in any of the matches that those countries have played in. The majority of these batters have consistently caused problems for the opposition’s bowlers.
On this list, we take a look at the players who have scored the most runs throughout the course of their careers, and we also highlight the currently active players who have the best chance of breaking an Ashes record in the near future.
The Player With the Most Ashes Runs in History:
Don Bradman, from Australia, amassed a total of 5,028 runs.
It should come as no surprise that the legendary Australian cricketer Sir Donald Bradman, who is largely regarded as the greatest batsman in the history of the Test format, tops the list of players who have scored the most runs in the history of the Ashes by a significant margin.
His first and last Test matches in a spectacular career were both played against Australia’s Ashes opponents, England, and Bradman scored a staggering 5,028 runs for Australia while playing against England. These two occurrences occurred on separate dates, 20 years apart in 1928 and 1948.
The Don faced off against England 37 times and batted in 63 innings total, punishing them with 19 hundreds, which is seven more than any other player has ever recorded in the history of the series.
On July 11, 1930, in the third and final test match between Australia and England at Headingley, Bradman scored 334 runs from a total of 448 deliveries to make a triple century.
Don Bradman tallied in The Ashes for Australia.
At the time, it was a batting innings that set a new world record, and it has only been surpassed once in Ashes cricket since then (by Len Hutton, who scored 364 in 1938).
He hit another triple century (304) in 1934, again in Leeds, and produced a total of eight scores of 200 or more in all of his games with England, which helped him to earn the greatest Ashes run total. In addition, he had a total of eight centuries in his career with England. It is interesting to note that neither of his two incredible innings scoring more than 300 runs resulted in a victory for Australia, since both matches were affected by the weather and finished in a draw.
In the Ashes, Bradman scored an incredible 89.78 runs per game on average. Although this makes for depressing reading for England, the fact that their rate is lower than his legendary Test career average of 99.94 indicates that they were able to restrict him ever so slightly more than India, South Africa, and the West Indies were.
Jack Hobbs, representing England, scored 3,636 runs.
Hobbs played in the Ashes for a total of 22 years until calling it quits in 1930, the same year that Bradman broke through on the international cricket stage.
He was another batting great of that era, reaching 12 hundreds for England against Australia, and he is the only player other than The Don to have topped 3,500 Ashes runs. He was a part of England’s team that won the Ashes.
Hobbs was a reliable scorer who added 15 fifties to his 12 centuries throughout the course of his career. Because he scored more than 50 runs in 27 innings, he now trails only Bradman (31) in the annals of Ashes history for that particular statistical category. He also leads the pack in terms of the total number of runs scored.
3,417 runs scored by Steve Smith of Australia.
During the Ashes series in 2023, Smith surpassed Allan Border and Steve Waugh, two other famous Australian cricketers.
Since Bradman’s retirement in 1948, Relentless Smith has hit more hundreds in The Ashes than any other player for either team. He has achieved 12 hundreds total. His most recent century occurred in the first innings of the second test match at Lord’s, where he scored 110 runs and contributed to Australia’s establishment of a commanding lead that England was unable to overcome.
In tests played against England, he has scored an additional 13 fifties and has a batting average of 56.01, which is nearly comparable to his remarkable performance in all tests combined (58.61).
Smith has been a source of misery for England both at home and abroad. He has scored three hundreds against Australia’s formidable opponents, with two of those hundreds coming on English soil (the first in 2015 at Lord’s and the second in 2019 at Old Trafford).
But his best performance was in Perth, where he hit an incredible 239 runs off 399 balls in the third Test of 2017. This was in 2017. After compiling a massive score of 662 runs before declaring victory, Australia prevailed by a margin of one innings and 41 runs.
Smith’s strong performance in that series resulted in him scoring 687 runs, including three hundreds, and assisted Australia in cruising to a 4-0 victory at home. They have kept The Ashes in their possession ever since that time.
3,222 runs scored by Allan Border, of Australia
Border is considered to be one of the top players in the history of the Ashes series.
The former captain of Australia made seven hundreds in matches against England, and he capped off his career with an astounding 200 not out in the fourth test of the Ashes series in 1993, which was played at Headingley.
In the end, though, Border’s longevity and consistency were the factors that contributed to his rise to such a prominent position in the ranks of all-time Ashes players.
AB faced the England bowling attack in 73 innings, which was more than any other player in the top eight, and he scored a total of 26 scores of 50 runs or more, averaging a remarkable 55.55.
3,173 runs scored by Steve Waugh of Australia.
Waugh is yet another one of Australia’s Ashes greats who has scored a lot of runs against England. Australia has four players who are now ranked in the top five places.
Even though Waugh was victorious in his first Ashes series in 1986–1987, the memories of having to play against him are likely to be particularly unpleasant for England’s fans.
Following that loss, Waugh became a member of the baggy green team, who went on to win eight consecutive Ashes series up until the time of his final campaign in 2003. The streak, which is now Australia’s best-ever against England, would finally come to an end in a memorable series in 2005 when Waugh announced his retirement from international cricket.
Waugh is doing well in the standings despite the fact that he scored six ducks versus England and has never reached the century mark more than once. He did score a total of 10 hundreds, 14 fifty-plus scores, and had an excellent batting average of 58.75.
3,037 runs scored by David Gower of England.
Gower currently holds the position of second-highest run scorer for England in the entire history of The Ashes.
He is the sixth and final player on either side to reach 3,000 Test runs in games played between England and Australia and he is the last of the six players.
Not only was Captain Gower’s score of 215 in the fifth test match of the 1985 series at Edgbaston his greatest score in Ashes tests, but it was also the best innings of his illustrious career overall.
For Gower, the summer of the Ashes was one to remember. He scored three hundreds and was instrumental in his country’s historic victory in the series, which they won 3-1; their most recent two decisive wins came by an innings’s margin. Additionally, he was a member of the group that successfully defended the urn in Australia 18 months later.
Gower had nine hundreds under his belt against the Australians by the time he played in his final Ashes match in 1991.
Wally Hammond, representing England, amassed 2,852 runs.
Between the years 1928 and 1947, Hammond was a member of The Ashes. Additionally, he scored nine century against Australia, just like Gower did.
On four of those instances, he was able to turn his hundred into a double hundred, which is an impressive feat. His career in the Ashes got off to a brilliant start in 1928, when England won the series 4-1. The best of his four innings that were over 200 runs was 251, which he scored against Australia in Sydney.
Hammond is the only player on this list other than Bradman to have more hundreds (nine) than half-centuries (seven). Three of his four double centuries were scored on Australian soil, and he is the only player on this list to have more hundreds than half-centuries.
The number of runs scored by Herbert Sutcliffe of England was 2,741.
In addition to often putting Australia to the sword and taking part in the bodyline series (1932-1933), Yorkshire great Sutcliffe was an England teammate of Hobbs and Hammond. He was also a member of the England team.
His 66.85 Ashes average is second only to Bradman among those players who have played in at least 10 matches during the entirety of the series’s history.
Since Sutcliffe scored runs at such a rapid pace against Australia, it is possible that he would have finished significantly higher in the standings if he had participated in more than his 27 matches against the country.
The ashes: Other players that scored a lot of runs
The number 10 spot is taken by Clem Hill of Australia, who scored 2,660 runs between the years 1896 and 1912, and John Edrich of England, who scored 2,644 runs between the years 1964 and 1975.
Next on the list is a collection of well-known players, including Geoffrey Boycott (2,579), Mark Taylor (2,496), Alastair Cook (2,493), Ricky Ponting (2.476), and Graham Gooch (2,436) All of these individuals have scored more than 2,000 runs throughout the history of the Ashes.
Only three of the players who have reached that total out of the original 31 are still actively playing the game.
The first is the legendary Australian cricketer Steve Smith, while the second is Joe Root, a former captain of England who currently has 2,428 runs in the Ashes. Even though Root has only scored four hundreds against Australia and has a maximum score of 180, he has also added 18 scores in the fifty-run range. Even though he is 32 years old, he still harbours the notion that he has more Ashes series left in him. David Warner, a veteran who has scored 2,173 runs, comes in third place on that list.
Ben Stokes (1,562 runs) and Jonny Bairstow (1,406 runs) of England are next on the list, followed by Usman Khawaja (1,378) and Marnus Labuschagne (1,016 runs) of Australia. These four hitters are the only other active Test batters who have achieved four figures in The Ashes.
There has never been a player in the history of the Ashes who has struck more sixes than England’s captain Stokes (39), and he added nine more to his ridiculous total of 155 during the second innings of the Lord’s Test in 2023. Although he scored 15 hundreds over the course of an exciting series, he was unable to steer his country to its first victory in the Ashes after four attempts since Australia maintained possession of the urn when the series ended in a tie.
