Three rapes every day, overall crime cases increase by 20% in Delhi: NCRB Data

Delhi continued to report a high number of rapes, 24 such crimes were reported every week on an average to the Delhi Police.

According to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) Report, Delhi reported at least three rapes and 126 vehicle thefts every day in 2019, the year when overall crime in the national capital went up by 20% compared to the previous year.

With the registration of 1,253 rape cases in Delhi during 2019, an increase of 3% as compared to 2018, when the corresponding figure docked at 1,215. However, the city recorded a decline in cases of molestation and sexual harassment in 2019. A total of 2,811 such cases were registered in 2019, down from 3,257 cases in 2018, the data shows.

As per the NCRB data, thefts accounted for most of the crimes in Delhi. Over 82% of the 299,475 crimes in Delhi were thefts such as burglaries, stealing of vehicles, or snatching that do not involve the use of force.

The crimes in this category saw an increase of 25.7% as compared to 2018. In sharp contrast, thefts accounted for just a little over 20% of the 3.2 million crimes across India where the overall thefts increased by 8%.

Meanwhile, the city continued to report a high number of rapes, 24 such crimes were reported every week on an average to the Delhi Police. Rape cases in 2019 rose by 3% compared to the previous year.

The city also reported marginal increase in murders which went up 1.5% from 513 to 521.
