Chennai: Infant turns HIV positive after govt hospital transfuses infected blood

After the recent Tamil Nadu medical negligence case, a 19-year-old blood donor attempted suicide on Wednesday after he realised that he was HIV Positive and his donated blood has been infused to a pregnant woman in Tamil Nadu resulting her to be infected with HIV too.

A resident of Ramanathapuram district attempted suicide by drinking poison due to shame. He was immediately rushed to the hospital and is now under treatment.

This incident comes close on the heels of a shocking case of lapse in screening process at a government hospital in Sattur, which left a nine-month pregnant woman infected with HIV. The woman had visited Sattur government hospital on December 3 for a checkup. She was diagnosed to be anemic following which blood was transfused to her in the hospital.

The victim had filed an FIR against the doctor and the nurse at Sattur police station. It was the second time that the woman was pregnant but due to the transfusion of HIV+ blood, there is a serious health risk for not just her but to her unborn baby as well.

Three lab technicians, Valarmathi, Ramesh and Ganesh Babu at the Sivakasi government hospital were suspended on Wednesday by the health department. To make matters worse, Sivakasi government officials tried to persuade the couple against filing an official police complaint and instead settle with the compensation.
