To Let movie review: A powerful movie with strong social message

The Tamil movie, To Let is the first time ever Tamil film to screen over 100 International film festivals and have been nominated in 80. The film has bagged 34 international awards. It was also awarded 65th National Film Award for the Best Feature Film.

After a long journey, the film was released in theatres today and is receiving rave reviews from the critics and the audience.

The movie is the directional debut of cinematographer Chezhiyan and it brings an important message of how our lives are being affected by Urbanisation.

The film states the fact while the IT industry has grown manifold, and demand has increased in Chennai, house rents have been hiked as well, which has left lakhs on streets. Lack of concentration on employment and infrastructural development in rural sectors has led to urbanisation, and hence, the concentration of urban development projects only leads to internal migrations of landless, unemployed people around the country.

It also speaks of the difficulty faced by the majority of landless people fighting to get a house for rent at their cost and basic needs. The film has centred a family who has been asked to leave so that the owner can lease the apartment to an IT professional for a higher rent. The family is issued a 30-day notice to vacate.

The realistic portrayal by actors Santhosh Sreeram, Sheela Raj Kumar and Dharun Bala make the movie must watch.

On the technical front, the cinematography skills and direction by Chezhiyan deserves a special mention as it has created a natural lighting impact. The fact that the movie doesn’t have any song doesn’t affect the message the movie is conveying in the simplest manner.
