U.S. Air Force Day 2023: HISTORY
Six years after the first effective airplane was invented in 1903, the United States military purchased its first aircraft. In 1907, the U.S. Signal Corps established the first military aviation organization, the Aeronautical Division, anticipating tremendous success for their new invention. Later on, however, the Aeronautical Division was too limited and inadequate for aerial combat. After the tribulations of World War II, it became clear that airpower would become even more indispensable subsequently. In 1947, the National Security Act reorganized the U.S. military and intelligence agencies, establishing the Air Force as a separate entity.
President Harry Truman proclaimed the first Air Force Day on August 1, 1947. This was done to honor the personnel of the intrepid United States Air Force and all those who have maintained and expanded the nation’s air power. This holiday was first observed on August 1 to honor the 40th anniversary of the Aeronautical Division of the United States Signal Corps. However, on September 18, the United States Air Force was constituted as a separate branch of the United States Armed Forces, and the date of this holiday was changed.
This day seeks to raise public awareness of the significance of national security and express gratitude to those who risk their lives to protect the nation and preserve its prosperity.
