Amidst the severe drought conditions in Kerala, water is being smuggled out of Malampuzha by the truckloads to brew beer in United Breweries.

According to a Manorama News report, tankers smuggled water from Malampuzha to the brewery in Puthussery. United Brewery was promoted by absconding businessman Vijay Mallya.

The tanker smuggled lakh of liters of water from the plant that supplies drinking water to the whole of Palakkad. The tankers reach the plant around midnight and proceed towards the brewery after 3 am.

Palakkad MLA Shafi Parambil told Newsd that he would raise the issue in the Assembly as the state was already struggling with severe drought conditions.

“Kerala is undergoing through severe drought condition. There has been restriction imposed on extracting ground water for commercial purpose. This case shows the serious corruption by water authorities and government’s inefficiency to handle the crisis. The opposition will raise the issue in Assembly and will pressurise government for a proper inquiry,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Kerala water authority official responded to media that they have not authorised any institution to draw water from the reservoir for at least a month and a half.
