Congratulating Prime Minister Modi on poll win in Uttar Pradesh, Congress Vice president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said that the party will continue to fight to win the hearts and minds of people.
After five hours of counting, the BJP led in 309 seats in UP. Along with its two local allies, the party will have a comfortable two-thirds majority in the 403-member legislative assembly.
Modi’s party is now set to return to power in Uttar Pradesh after a 14-year gap during which regional parties such as the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party have held sway.

Rahul Gandhi also congratulated captain Amrinder Singh for Congress poll win in Punjab. “My heartiest congratulations to Capt Amarinder Singhji & all our party workers who worked tirelessly @capt_amarinder,” he tweeted.
On the party’s victory in Punjab, Rahul Gandhi added “I thank everyone in Punjab for their immense faith and support. This is a mandate for a brighter future for Punjab and it’s youth.”
In a message to its workers, Mr Gandhi added “To all Congress workers across India: We stand resolute & committed to our values & our belief in an India united in strength & purpose.”
The Congress will form the government in Punjab as it has won 71 seats and is ahead on three others in the 117-seat assembly. The BJP-SAD alliance has been trounced—registering only three wins. The AAP has won 20 seats.
