Uttar Pradesh: CMO suspended after washing feet of sanitary worker

Ballia: Dr Umapati Dwivedi, Chief Medical Officer, was suspended after the video in which he can be seen washing the feet of a sanitation worker went viral.

It all began when Dwivedi called one of the sanitation worker at the hospital to his home. The CMO then washed the worker’s feet. A video of the incident was recorded by one of Umapati’s acquaintance and after it was shared on the social media, it went viral in no time.

Interestingly, the cleaner whose feet the CMO washed, was not paid salary for months. The reason for Dwivedi’s suspension has reportedly been that the CMO took no effective steps to ensure that the worker receives his due salary. In his place, Dr Pritam Mishra has been posted as the new CMO.

In February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi washed the feet of five sanitation workers in Prayagraj. However, the opposition parties had seen it as a poll move to reach out to the Dalit communities.
