Senior Congress leader and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari and his son Rohit Shekhar have joined BJP in presence of party President Amit Shah on Wednesday. While the development came as a major boost to the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the crucial assembly election, it is a major jolt for Congress.
The move is being seen as the BJP’s effort to woo Brahmins to improve its electoral prospects.
ND Tiwari served as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister thrice between 1976 and 1989. His son Rohit Shekhar will also follow his father’s footsteps. Notably, the Congress veteran was also the governor of Andhra Pradesh from August 2007 to December 2009.
Earlier, the 91-year-old leader was involved in a paternity row. However, in April 2014, the Delhi High Court declared Rohit Shekhar as his biological son.
