The world recognizes this day as the birthday of Lord Buddha. The day also marks his enlightenment and Mahaparinirvana according to multiple traditions.

  • Wake up early in the morning to perform their morning bath at either a holy river or a holy pond or their home using Ganga jal mixed with regular water.
  • Observe a complete fast which lasts for one day and they eat satvik food after the moon appears or after they finish their ceremonial worship.
  • Offer fruits and tulsi leaves and sweets while reciting the Satyanarayan Katha.

  • Donate food grains and clothes and water pots and fans and umbrellas and money to those who need assistance.
  • Go to Vishnu temples and Buddha temples and local shrines to receive divine blessings.

The religious texts show special approval for donations which help people deal with summer heat. The common offerings that people make include:

  • Rice, wheat and jaggery
  • White clothes
