Jami Millia Islamia Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar while addressing a press conference on Monday said that whatever has happened is not acceptable and the institution will file a case against the police action against the students.

The press briefing was held after three days of continues protest by Jamia students against Citizenship Amendment Act during which the University turned into a battlefield witnessing students and police indulge in violence.

On Friday police and students, who wanted to march to Parliament House to protest the Citizenship Amendment Act, clashed with each other prompting AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan to reach the spot to take stock of the situation.

Delhi Police on Sunday alleged that some people who were part of the agitation against the amended citizenship law came prepared for arson and torched vehicles, reported news agency PTI.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Chinmoy Biswal said nearly 1,500 people had begun a protest-march from Jamia university area around 3 pm but police stopped them near New Friends Colony and requested them to return and protest peacefully.

Reacting on the incidents, the vice-chancellor said, “A lot of our university property has been damaged. There has been a massive loss. Who will compensate for this? What will happen to the emotional loss we have suffered, the students have suffered? Who will be responsible for this? We want to appeal to not believe rumours or spread them because it tarnishes our image. This was the only peaceful university,”

Earlier on Monday morning, the Supreme Court said it will hear all pleas related to the Jamia Millia Islamia clashes on Tuesday while issuing a stern warning to students to stop riots. A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde said it will hear the pleas along with other pending matters coming up for hearing on December 18.
