What Is Penisgate:In what could be one of the most unusual controversies in Olympic history, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is being drawn into an extraordinary dispute involving alleged genital manipulations by elite ski jumpers, a story widely dubbed “Penisgate.” The curious saga has stunned the winter sports world as it unfolds ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, blending sports science, aerodynamics and, unexpectedly, anatomy in a way few anticipated.
How an Odd Rumour Took Flight?
The controversy began with a report in the German newspaper Bild, which claimed some male ski jumpers might be using temporary methods including injections of hyaluronic acid or inserting materials into their underwear to alter measurements used for ski jumping suit fitting.
Ski jumping demands its competitors to wear specially designed skin-tight suits that require personalized fitting based on their 3D body measurements. The measurement for the suit dimensions starts from the lowest area of the athlete’s genitalia which serves as the starting point for all further measurements.
The research showed that even minor alterations to a suit’s surface area results in significant performance changes because a study demonstrated that increasing ski suit circumference by 2 centimeters leads to 4 percent drag reduction and 5 percent lift increase.
Bild’s extraordinary allegations suggested that jumpers could theoretically increase genital size temporarily so that the subsequent scan would require a looser-fitting suit with more surface area, potentially yielding a competitive edge.

WADA Responds: “We’ll Look Into It”
At a press briefing in Milan, WADA President Witold Banka acknowledged the unusual claims with a wry tone, saying he would examine them further, especially given ski jumping’s popularity in his native Poland.
WADA Director General Olivier Niggli was more cautious, noting that the agency had not previously encountered such allegations and that there was no current evidence that these practices are actually happening.
“I am not aware of the details of ski jumping and how this can improve (the performance), but if any sign was to come to the surface, we will look at it. I haven’t heard about that until you mention it,” he told reporters in Milan.
“If it is actually doping related – we don’t do other means of enhancing performance – but our committee (annually reviewing banned substances) will certainly look to whether it falls into this category,” he added.
However, he stressed that if any tactic was found to endanger athlete health or violate the spirit of sport, it would fall under WADA’s jurisdiction and be subject to Investigation.
What Is Penisgate: Alleged Methods
According to the reports:
Some athletes are rumoured to have tried injecting hyaluronic acid, a substance commonly used in cosmetic procedures into their penises to create temporary enlargement.
Others may have tried stuffing clay or similar materials in their underwear during 3D scanning to increase their measured crotch size.
Experts have underscored that such injections are not medically recommended and come with significant health risks. A physician quoted in media coverage warned that the practice could cause pain, infection or deformity, and carries no legitimate clinical benefit.
Ski Jumping Has a History With Suit Manipulation
This latest uproar didn’t arrive in isolation. In 2025, two Norwegian Olympic medalists Marius Lindvik and Johann André Forfang were suspended for three months after their team was found to have illegally altered suit seams around the crotch area to boost aerodynamic performance.
Three members of the coaching staff were also banned. WADA President Witold Banka, asked about the reports on Thursday, responded with a smile, saying ski jumping was very popular in his native Poland and that he would look into the matter.
