Social Security Fairness Act: Thousands of people will soon get more money from Social Security. President Joe Biden signed a new law called the Social Security Fairness Act.

This law removes two rules that had reduced Social Security benefits for people with public pensions, like teachers, firefighters, and police officers. This change will help over 2.5 million Americans.

The Social Security Fairness Act was passed by the House of Representatives in November and approved by the Senate with a 70-26 vote last month. The White House praised the law as the first expansion of Social Security benefits in 20 years. This historic change will provide more money to retirees and their families, ensuring they receive the full benefits they deserve.

What Does the New Law Do?

The new law gets rid of two rules that cut benefits for people who worked in public jobs. According to USAToday, the first rule, called the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), reduced Social Security benefits for people who had both a public pension and Social Security.

The second rule, called the Government Pension Offset (GPO), reduced survivor benefits for the families of these workers. These rules were unfair to workers who paid into Social Security but saw their benefits lowered because of their public jobs.

“The bill I’m signing today is about a simple proposition: Americans who have worked hard all their lives to earn an honest living should be able to retire with economic security and dignity,” Biden said.

More Money for Retirees and Families

Now that these rules are gone, retirees who were affected will get their full Social Security benefits. By December 2025, they can expect an average increase of $360 each month. Surviving spouses will also see more money between $700 and $1,190 more each month, depending on their situation.

This is especially important for widows and widowers who didn’t receive full benefits after their spouse passed away.

Retroactive Payments

The new law also includes payments for money that retirees missed in 2024. People who qualify will get a lump sum to make up for the benefits they lost. This helps make sure no one is left behind.

In short, the Social Security Fairness Act will give retirees and their families more money, correcting unfair rules from the past. This is great news for people who worked in public jobs and now get the full benefits they deserve.
