Who is Sushmita Sinha? Why netizens are demanding her arrest

#arrestsushmitasinha is trending on Twitter. The trend started when a journalist, Sushmita Sinha in a video clip was seen holding a Hindu scripture, ‘Haritalika Teej Vrat Katha’, with the image of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on the cover and asking viewers what do they think about her using the book as a ‘toilet paper’.

In the video Sinha is heard saying, “Is ‘raddi’ kitab ke liye maine Rs 15 kharch kiye. Ab yeh kitaab mere kisi kaam ki nahi hai. To mai yeh socch rahi hu, ise mai tissue paper ki tarah ya toilet paper ki tarah istemaal kaaru. Aap ka kya kehna hai.”

According to a tweet posted by Hindu IT Cell, she posted an Instagram story in which she showed the book hanging in her toilet in place of the toilet paper.

This is not the first time she has posted anything against the Hindu faith and practices. On August 6, she posted an image on her Twitter account and said, “Those who are alive didn’t get it, but a mere stone got it.” She was referring to the Ram Mandir as ‘the house for a stone’.

After facing a severe backlash and demands for her arrest on social media, Sushmita posted a video on Instagram saying that she only read what was written in the book of Teej fast and there was nothing wrong with what she did. She completely missed out on the fact that she had used the book with photos of Hindu Gods and Goddess as toilet paper that caused the controversy. She alleged that since her video went viral, she has been receiving life and rape threats. She also said that people who threatened her should also be behind the bars.

Teej is a three-day-long Hindu festival that celebrates the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is considered one of the most auspicious festivals observed by Hindu women. The significance of such a festival is for women to ask for special blessings by Lord Shiva, to have attained a good husband in life, and to pray for his longevity and prosperity. Thus, married women seek the blessings of Goddess Parvati on the Teej Festival for marital bliss.
