Next Bengal CM:The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will establish its first government in West Bengal after the party achieved a decisive electoral victory during the 2026 Assembly elections. The party has reportedly reached the 200-seat threshold across the 294-contested territories which marks the end of Trinamool Congress (TMC) rule that lasted more than ten years under Mamata Banerjee.

Government Formation Process Underway

After the election results were announced the process to create a new government started. The BJP legislative party will hold a meeting soon to choose its leader who will proceed to establish the new government. The swearing-in ceremony is expected to occur on May 9 which coincides with Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary.

Modi said in a statement the West Bengal assembly elections “will be remembered forever. People’s power has prevailed and BJP’s politics of good governance has triumphed. I bow to each and every person of West Bengal.”

The party shows signs of planning to establish a governance system that includes both a Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister which other BJP-ruled states use to improve administration and enhance local representation.

Who Will Be Next Bengal CM?

1. Suvendu Adhikari

Suvendu Adhikari has emerged as the strongest contender for the Chief Minister post. His victory against Mamata Banerjee in a major election battle brought him national recognition which people now credit for his role in expanding the BJP throughout the state.

Sources suggest he is likely to become the leader of the BJP legislative party making him the leading candidate for the highest office.

2. Agnimitra Paul

The race includes Agnimitra Paul as a significant competitor. She serves as a BJP MLA while being the main representative of the party’s women’s division who brings modern leadership abilities to her work and her efforts to develop community connections.

3. Roopa Ganguly

Roopa Ganguly who served as a Rajya Sabha MP who became a public figure through her work in the news media and entertainment industry now competes for the highest office. She has acquired leadership skills through her public administration background which enables her to establish connections with citizens.

Other Candidates

The political discussion among various leaders identifies Dilip Ghosh and Samik Bhattacharya as potential candidates who remain unrecognized throughout this election process.

What’s Next?

The legislative party meeting will lead to a government decision which should arrive within several days. The BJP leadership needs to consider three factors which include regional balance, governance experience and political messaging before selecting a candidate who already leads the competition.
