India’s Union Budget 2026 February 1: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget on February 1, 2026. This will be the ninth time in a row that she presents the Budget. What is different this year is the day which is February 1, 2026 falls on a Sunday. Many people are surprised because the Union Budget has never been presented on a Sunday before in India.
The reason is simple. The government now follows a fixed rule to present the Budget on February 1 every year and this rule started in 2017. The government did not want to change the date because keeping the same date helps finish all approvals before the new financial year starts on April 1.

Why the Budget Date was Changed?
Before 2017, the Union Budget was usually presented on the last working day of February. This system came from British times and continued for many years after India became independent. For example, in 2016, the Budget was presented on February 29 because it was a leap year.
This old system caused problems. After the Budget was announced, there was very little time left to approve new schemes and policies before April 1. Government offices and businesses found it hard to plan quickly. To fix this issue, then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley changed the Budget date to February 1 starting from 2017. This gave Parliament enough time to discuss and pass the Budget before the new financial year began.
First Sunday Budget in India’s History
The 2026 Budget will be the first Union Budget to be presented on a Sunday. Even though this is new, there is no rule that says the Budget cannot be announced on a weekend. Parliament can meet on any day if needed. Budgets have been presented on Saturdays before. For example, Budget 2025 was announced on a Saturday by Nirmala Sitharaman. Budget 2015 was also presented on a Saturday by Arun Jaitley.

Presenting the Budget on February 1 gives enough time to pass important bills like the Appropriation Bill. This helps make sure money is available on time and government projects do not get delayed.
Why the Budget is Presented at 11 am?
Long ago, the Union Budget was presented at 5 pm. This timing was chosen to match British working hours. In 1999, this changed. Former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha decided the Budget should be presented at 11 am instead. He said India did not need to follow British time anymore. The earlier timing also gave Parliament more time to discuss the Budget on the same day. Since then, 11 am has become the fixed time for the Budget speech.
