Who Is Maris Nichols?
Maris Nichols, 25, worked as a biology teacher at Alexander High School in Douglas County, Georgia. Reports indicate she also served as a football operations manager for the school’s athletic program before transitioning into a teaching role.
Nichols reportedly joined the school staff in 2023 after graduating from Liberty University with a degree focused on teaching and education.
Following her arrest, her name and profile were removed from the school’s website, though officials have not publicly confirmed whether she has been terminated or suspended permanently.
Why Was Maris Nichols Arrested?
According to arrest warrants cited by multiple news outlets, Nichols allegedly had sexual intercourse with the same student on two separate occasions. Authorities claim:
The first alleged encounter occurred on April 23 inside a closet between classrooms at Alexander High School.
A second alleged incident reportedly took place on May 2 inside a Hummer parked in a residential driveway in Douglasville.
Investigators arrested Nichols on May 8, 2026. She was booked into the Douglas County Jail and later appeared before a judge, where bond was reportedly set at $40,000.
Douglas County School System Responds
In a statement shared with parents, the Douglas County School System said it was “deeply troubled” by the allegations and immediately launched an internal investigation after learning about the alleged misconduct.
“The Douglas County School System is deeply troubled by allegations against an individual associated with one of our schools,” the district said in a statement. “Upon learning of the alleged misconduct, the district immediately launched an investigation.”
The district added that student safety remains its highest priority and confirmed it is cooperating fully with state and local law enforcement agencies.
Parents in the community have since questioned how the alleged misconduct could have taken place on school property without being detected earlier.
Legal Charges
Nichols has been charged with two counts of sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority under Georgia law.
These charges are usually used when a teacher or a school staff member is accused of participating in sexual conduct with a student who is under their supervision.
