Willie Howard Mays was born in Alabama’s Westfield. His racial background is African American. Both of his parents were athletes, his father was William Howard Mays and his mother was Annie Satterwhite. His parents never married, and his father was responsible for his upbringing. His father was a baseball player and taught him how to play the game. Mays’ favourite baseball star as a child was New York Yankees’ Joe DiMaggio.

Mays began his professional baseball career as a high school senior with the Birmingham Black Barons. The principal threatened to suspend him because his travel for events would interfere with his studies. He was eventually restricted to playing only home games for the Black Barons. In 1950, he signed with the New York Giants despite intense competition from other organisations and in the same year 1950, he was called up from affiliate organisations and assigned to the main team.

In 1951, he won the “Rookie of the Year” award in his debut season after making an immediate impression upon joining the main team. He was conscripted into the army in his second season and spent the next two years on a military base. In 1954, upon his return to the team, Mays led them to a National League victory and was dubbed the league’s MVP. He was chosen for 24 all-star events between 1954 and 1973. Shortly after joining the New York Mets for the 1972-1973 season, he retired. Mays was a well-known name in baseball, and his statistics were extraordinary. His exploits have earned him the respect of baseball enthusiasts everywhere.
