Women’s march in California cancelled for being too white!

Women's march in California cancelled for being too white!

A women’s march planned for January 2019 in Humboldt County, California has officially been cancelled after organizers concluded that the event would be “overwhelmingly” white and would therefore not adequately represent the needs of the community.

“The local organizers are continuing to meet and discuss how to broaden representation in the organizing committee to create an event that represents and supports peoples who live here in Humboldt. Up to this point, the participants have been overwhelmingly white, lacking representation from several perspectives in our community,” the group said in a Facebook post on Friday, December 28th, according to The Huffington Post.

Let’s be clear: The event organizers are not cancelling the event because they don’t want white people involved; they’re cancelling it because they don’t consider an event that almost only includes white people an effective way to help all women. White feminism—aka the term used to describe a specific type of feminism rooted in white privilege (which often overlooks and ignores the everyday plights and challenges of non-white people) is very real, and we commend the rally’s organizers for recognizing it and attempting to actually do something about it.

A national march is scheduled in Washington D.C., as well as a number of cities around the country, for January 19th—so if you’re interested in marching for women’s rights, there are definitely ample opportunities.
