World Curlew Day 2024: World Curlew Day is observed annually on April 21 by various environmental organisations to bring attention to the issues curlews encounter. Curlews are a group of nine species of birds belonging to the genus Numenius. Long, slender, downcurved bills and mottled brown plumage are distinguishing characteristics of this avian. In 2017, Mary Colwell initiated the day as a grassroots effort to preserve the species. The plight of the bird is largely the result of human activity, and it is our primary responsibility to make the planet a safe haven for all living things, not just humans.
HISTORY OF WORLD CURLEW DAY
Prior to approximately 4.5 billion years ago, the earth was a chaotic chaos. It cooled progressively for over a billion years. Fossil evidence indicates that life existed approximately 3.5 billion years ago. From that point forward, evolution shaped the constitution, size, and behaviours of all living species into their present-day forms. However, this is not the conclusion. In the future years, numerous species will undergo evolution. However, human activities will cause the extinction of several beloved species in the future years. To prevent the extinction of various species, various laws, organisations, and campaigns are enacted. However, the root cause of the issue is always human desire for more, which will not be eliminated readily.
The curlew is one such species that requires our urgent assistance. Loss of habitat and predation on eggs and juvenile birds are the primary causes of the decline in curlew populations. In the past 15 years, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimates a 20–30% decline in curlew breeding populations. We might have lost the entire species within eight years if the birds’ condition had not improved in the following years.
Curlews are birds that migrate. Approximately a quarter of the world’s reproductive population of curlews reside in the United Kingdom, making it a crucial country for the species. We regard the conservation of curlews to be the highest conservation priority. With us initiating the transformation, there is still hope for the survival of these magnificent birds.
