June 5 isn’t just a day to read about the problems affecting the countryside, it is all about action and physically getting off your chair to do something to help preserve nature.

As the world celebrates the World Environment Day on Monday, Kerala government is taking a significant initiative in hopes of tackling the environment issues. Pinarayi government distributed one crore saplings for planting across the state. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in his Environment Day message asked for support and cooperation of all sections of the society in the government’s efforts of tree plantation.

Among others, Malayalam actor Mohanlal participated in the sapling of plants programme at a college. While Governor P Sathasivam planted a sapling at the Raja Bhavan compound as part of day’s celebrations. In an attempt to raise awareness, schools, local self-government bodies and voluntary associations encouraged the plant sapling programmes of the government under ‘Green Kerala Mission’.

As our environment is in a depleting state, the importance of trees is felt more than ever. The government has distributed environmental friendly plants, unlike those which absorb too much ground water.

Additionally, a campaign called ‘Connecting People to Nature’ was also launched. Meanwhile, BJP as part of its green campaign ‘Jalswaraj’, distributed more than 10 lakh saplings across the state for planting.
